“Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.” (James 1:27 ESV)

OrphanCare is a matter of Christian obedience because it expresses the heart of God and demonstrates the Gospel. The heart of God is visible throughout the Scriptures as He cares for the world that He created and shows mercy to the weak. Whenever we, as former orphans, care for orphans and pursue them with the love of God these Gospel truths are lived out and the Great Commission is fulfilled.

At Living Hope, we see OrphanCare happening in three distinct ways.

When you consider the millions of orphans around the world, you may think you have little to offer. That simply is not true. Every Christian can begin caring for orphans by committing to pray to the God who promised to be a Father to the Fatherless. Scripture clearly shows that God’s heart is for the fatherless. So, when we pray for the fatherless, we grow closer to His heart and become more conformed to His image. There are many ways you and your family can begin praying for the fatherless today.

Ways you might pray for orphans

  • Get an OrphanCare prayer map and spend family time praying for orphans
  • Find out about a family pursuing the fatherless and pray for them specifically
  • Pray that orphans around the world will know the one, true Father personally

There are already many people, both in our church and around the world, who recognize the needs of the fatherless and are seeking to serve them. A great step towards caring for orphans is to partner with these people and organizations. Through such a partnership you will be able to support these families and organizations and learn more about how you might be able to care more effectively for the fatherless around you.

Ways you might partner for orphans

  • Become a certified babysitter for a foster family
  • Sponsor a child through an organization like Compassion International
  • Join our Welcome Home team that cares for families through the foster and/or adoption process
  • Give financially to the church adoption fund

There are many different avenues in pursuing the fatherless. You may be prayerfully considering opening your home to a foster child in crisis or beginning the process of adopting a child. As you and your family seek to pursue the fatherless, the OrphanCare Ministry wants to partner with you to provide information, encouragement, connections, and prayer throughout your journey.

Ways you might pursue orphans

  • Become a foster family
  • Apply for domestic or international adoption
  • Provide temporary shelter for children in crisis
